Waste Sector
The Waste Sector contributed to about 4% of India's total GHG emission in 2018. Municipal solid waste,
domestic
wastewater and industrial wastewater are the key sources of GHG emissions in the sector. Methane
(CH4) is produced and
released into the atmosphere as a by-product of the anaerobic decomposition of solid waste and when
domestic and
industrial wastewater is treated or disposed anaerobically. Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions occur
due to protein content
in domestic wastewater.
The waste sector emission estimates have been prepared through a detailed disaggregated estimate of
India's GHG
emissions from 2005-2018 resulting from disposal and decay of municipal solid waste, and from the
treatment and
discharge of urban domestic wastewater and industrial wastewater.
